It must have been onerous to name the hippopotamus.
Such a task was assigned to Adam.
It was a God given task.
And it belonged to Adam as he had dominion over creation.
Adam is the Reason We Need a Relationship with Christ
Let’s look at Genesis chapter 2 verses 18 through 20 (ESV).
Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.
The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him.
There it is – Adam had dominion over all creation.
Therefore it came upon him to give names to animals; he probably named plant life also, but we aren’t told so.
This must have taken quite a bit of time. There number of species of beasts and birds is over 10,000. (Google it)
See Adam was the only person alive.
God had just made him.
Notice God made Adam as an adult.
As long as Adam followed God there was no problem. God would only tell Adam the right thing to do.
Adam did not need to learn the difference between right and wrong.
Adam must have been quite proud of himself that God had given him such an important task.
Just think how self important he became after God created Eve out of one of Adam’s ribs.
Adam could well have said something like, “I’ll tell you what, I’m becoming very important around here.” There was no one to hear him, but he could have thought it.
God also gave Adam the job as head grounds keeper of the Garden of Eden. Another important job.
It’s not clear why Adam decided he did not to follow God.
Adam defied God. As a result, every human born since Adam is sin enabled.
We can’t escape it on our own. It’s part of us.
